What to Expect at a Vein Treatment Clinic

January 12, 2018 • • Vein Treatment

When you visit a vein treatment clinic for the first time, you may not know what to expect. Seeking treatment for spider veins or varicose veins can be overwhelming, and you may be feeling nervous and/or confused. Below is some information to put your mind at ease about your first visit.

What is a Vein Treatment Clinic?

A vein treatment clinic is a medical facility dedicated to the treatment of abnormal veins, including spider veins and varicose veins. These clinics are able to diagnose various vein conditions and recommend the treatment options that are most appropriate for the patient. A vein clinic is staffed by experienced vein doctors who have been trained to recognize and treat problems with the veins.

What Happens During an Initial Visit?’

During your first visit to a vein clinic, you will begin with a physical exam. The doctor will look at your abnormal veins and review your medical history. In addition, the doctor may ask you questions about your symptoms and your lifestyle. You may also have an ultrasound or other testing designed to help the doctor learn more about your condition. After reviewing all of the information collected carefully, the doctor will arrive at a diagnosis and recommend various treatment options. You will be able to consider these options and make a decision based on your preferences and treatment goals.

Treatments recommended for vein disease often include sclerotherapy and radiofrequency ablation. Sclerotherapy is appropriate for both spider veins and varicose veins. It involves injecting a sclerosing solution into each affected vein. This solution makes the walls of the vein swell and stick together. Eventually, the vein disappears from view. Radiofrequency ablation, on the other hand, involves introducing radiofrequency energy into the interior of the vein to force it to collapse. This treatment option is best for varicose veins.
